Which Royal Grass® is best for your garden?

There is no single best Royal Grass lawn, and any retailer claiming otherwise is describing their own stock rather than your garden. The range is deliberately built so a short dense lawn and a tall soft lawn can both be right, in different gardens.

This guide sets out the five things that actually change the decision, in the order they matter, and then shows every lawn we supply with the specifications held for it so you can compare like for like.

Start with appearance, not specification

Colour is the first thing anyone notices and the last thing a specification sheet explains. The catalogue uses Royal Grass' own colour names, which fall into three broad families: fresh green, grass green and summer green with sun-tanned tips. Fresh green reads brightest and most uniform; grass green reads as a well-kept lawn; summer green carries brown-tipped blades that mimic a lawn in July.

  • A shaded or north-facing garden: a lighter, fresher green lifts the space and stops the lawn reading as flat.
  • A sunny garden with mature planting: a summer green with sun-tanned tips sits more comfortably next to real borders.
  • A small courtyard or roof terrace: a tighter, shorter pile reflects less and looks neater at close range.

Pile height decides feel, not quality

Pile height is measured from the backing to the tip of the blade, and in our catalogue it runs from 30mm to 52mm. Taller does not mean better: it means softer underfoot, slower to dry after rain and slightly more work to keep looking upright. Shorter means firmer, faster draining and more tolerant of constant traffic and furniture.

How the garden is used

This is where most buyers get it right or wrong. A lawn that is walked across to reach a shed has different demands from one that hosts a trampoline, a football goal and a dog. Where use is intensive, look for the lawns described as built for children and pets, and check the backing and drainage on the product page rather than the marketing line.

  • Children and dogs: taller, denser lawns with a triple backing cope better with constant wear.
  • Entertaining and visual finish: mid-pile lawns hold a crisp edge and photograph well.
  • Roof terraces and balconies: short pile, lighter weight, and a plan for how the roll reaches the roof.
  • Rented or temporary: sample the cheapest sensible lawn first; the difference is mostly in the pile.

Maintenance differences are real but modest

Every artificial lawn needs brushing, occasional rinsing and debris removal. Taller lawns need brushing more often to keep the pile upright, and benefit more from an infill that supports the blades. Shorter lawns recover faster and hide less debris, so they need clearing more often in autumn. Neither is hard work; the difference is a few minutes a month.

Our maintenance guide covers brushing technique, infill topping up and stain removal in detail.

Price, read properly

Prices are per square metre excluding VAT, and the cost of the lawn is the area you need multiplied by that figure, with an allowance for waste. A cheaper lawn in a larger quantity can cost more than a dearer one used efficiently, which is why width planning matters as much as price. The cost guide walks through the whole basket.

A three-step way to decide

  1. 01

Shortlist by pile height for the way the garden is used

Short for terraces and heavy traffic, mid for family gardens, tall for lawns that are sat on. This usually removes half the range straight away.

  2. 02

Choose the colour you want to look at

Between the shortlisted lawns, pick the green that suits the light and the planting. Colour is the only difference you will notice every day.

  3. 03

Check the money and the roll

Run your measurements through the calculator, then confirm the roll width divides into your garden sensibly. Our roll width guide explains why this changes the price.
